First up for some holiday racing was a "10k" in California! Being the new kid at work I wasn't sure I'd get time off around the holidays, so it was great to be able to fly home for Thanksgiving. In late October I had a biopsy of a mole that turned out to be melanoma (yikes!) so family time was especially nice before my excision the following week. I had NO IDEA what pace to shoot for. I had gotten my 5k time below 22 minutes, but that was in Albuquerque at 5k feet. Tempo runs in Santa Fe (7k feet) at even just an 8:00 pace were rough. I secretly hoped I could muster 7:30's for the turkey trot, but wasn't even sure how that would go! I truly ran by effort, which I need to just always do from now on! |
Mile 1- 7:17 Keep it easy, talk to a stranger for awhile, don't blow up.
Mile 2- 7:06 Weird, even this feels doable. Let's ramp it up.
Mile 3- 6:54 Now we're talking.
Mile 4- 6:53 Another mile under 7? WIN.
Mile 5- 6:45 What's happening? Can I average under 7?
Mile 6- 6:55 I can't wait to sprint the last quarter mile and get a new 10k PR!!
Mile 6.01- What the what! WHY IS THE FINISH LINE RIGHT HERE??
Sooooooooo disappointing!!! I was super stoked to average 6:59 for 6 miles, but truly disappointed that I didn't get to set a new 10k PR and see what my avg pace would have been after a sprint.
I actually had been losing a little bit of motivation in Santa Fe since I felt like I wasn't really improving all that much and super far off my 5k times in Oklahoma, but this showed me that I AM making progress! 2nd age group, 8th female
